}" border="0" /> 食肉植物又称食虫植物。这种植物能借助特别的结构捕捉昆虫或其他小动物，并靠消化酶、细菌或两者的作用将小虫分解，然后吸收其养分。 已知食肉植物约有400种。这类植物多为绿色植物。食肉植物能将捕获的动物分解，这个过程类似动物的消化过程。分解的最终产物，尤其是氮的化合物及盐类为植物所吸收。 食肉植物多数能进行光合作用，又能消化动物蛋白质，能适应极端的环境。其诱捕工具多为叶的变态。半数以上的食肉植物，其特点是花两侧对称。有些食肉植物几乎遍及全世界. 其中捕蝇草的反应最为迅速。食肉植物的捕虫机制有的是利用产生的粘性液体粘住猎物，有的是用像瓶子似的叶子诱猎物进入后再封口等等。大部分食肉植物都生长在潮湿荒地、酸沼、树沼、泥岸等水分丰富而土壤酸性缺乏氮素的环境。无论水生、陆生或两栖，食肉植物均有相似的生态特点。大部分食肉植物是多年生草本，高不过30厘米，常仅10至15厘米。各别种类有长至1米的，最小的坷以隐藏在水藓沼泽的藓类中。 植物藉由根部吸收水份及矿物质，由叶片吸收二氧化碳，再经由阳光所推动的光合作用将二氧化碳、水及矿物质转化为碳水化合物及其它的有机物，植物因而得以成长。采用粘着方式来捕虫的食虫植物，则采用气味来吸引昆虫。毛毡苔、彩虹草、捕虫蓳能散发出特别的气味，只是这些气味通常过于微量，因此人不太容易闻到。
